The company sells 2017 Ram ProMaster City as a five-passenger “wagon” van and a two-passenger cargo version. Even though you will not be able to stand straight inside ProMaster city as you can do in the full-size Ram ProMaster, this minivan nonetheless still provides a very roomy interior with more spacious cargo capacity than most of its competitors do within this segment. The payload rating for ProMaster City is nearly 1,900 pounds, which surpasses most competitors effortlessly.

However, ProMaster City is not an exact copy of Fiat Doblo. Under the hood, this minivan has a far larger engine. Both Wagon and Cargo versions come with the same 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with a 9-speed automatic. This choice of powertrain results in respectable fuel economy and acceleration. For a commercial van, ProMaster City rides really well. Even so, do not expect any revelations when it comes to the handling department for a vehicle with tall and narrow profile like this one. This is why we do not recommend the 2017 Ram ProMaster City Wagon as an alternative to your 5-passenger crossover SUV, aside from the fact that the limited safety features available and noise cabin.

Ram ProMaster City Specs, Performance, and Driving Impressions

The 2017 Ram ProMaster City is run by a 2.4L 4-cylinder engine pitting out total output of 178 horsepower and 174 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated with 9-speed automatic transmissions that send power to the front wheels. The fuel economy rating is estimated by EPA at 24 mpg combined (21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway). Total payload capacity is at 1,883 pounds, which is the most you can find within the smaller commercial van segment. If you are looking for the higher payload rating, size up to the Mercedes Metris. When properly equipped, the Ram ProMaster City has maximum towing capacity of 2,000 pounds—the same one the Ford Transit Connect can do.

Driving the 2017 Ram ProMaster City, the engine is capable of producing an ideal amount of power for a normal driving environment. Even so, if you attempt to accelerate quickly to highway speeds while hauling a full cargo load will be a different matter. Worry not, though, because that’s always true for any vehicle in this segment.

The 9-speed automatic transmission, though, is smooth and can keep your engine rpm low for the mpg of maximum highway cruising, yet it can also result in clunky changes in gear when you are at low speeds. Even so, the smooth ride provided by the independent multilink rear suspension in 2017 Ram ProMaster City can offer you a smooth ride, along with the reasonably low height when riding. Handling is confident, even though it’s not as agile as that of Metris and Transit Connect.
